A Call for Grounding
2018

A performance work that speaks to methods of engaging in space through the language of opacity. Employing the piece, Hair Rug, Kai body rendered absent and is transformed into a series a series of gestures and movements. A audio track complements the performance, Kai invited Black women in her life to send her their voices. Prompted by the question, "What is a moment that altered your life, that changed your way of existing?" During the 45 minute performance, stories of motherhood, death, transitions enveloped the space. This work evokes the presence of those who often are often silenced.

Tender Ails
2021

Tender Ails is a site activation that is a response to the current effort to the building of Cop City, an expanded police training facility located in a predominantly Black and Brown neighborhood. This facility will destroy hundreds of acres of green space and invades the housing security of those who live in the area. Kai hair is tethered to wool spun yarns that are nailed into the ground. Lasting 2 hours, Kai invited viewers to sit with her as she performed in silence. Helicopters, cars, and the calls of the forest act as the score. There is no seperation from the ground. The Earth holds us and provides us with what we need to survive. We are all bound to it, though we seek to resist and impeded on its resourcefulness. We exist because of. , inspired by the fungi networks that feed forest floor. I wanted to have a meditation, a moment of silence to sit with what we have, and remember what we are fighting for.
